The Effect of Parietal Cell Vagotomy and Histamine Stimulation on the Gastric Acid Secretion and Serum Gastrin

Abstract
This study is to evaluate the effect of parietal cell vagotomy and histamine stimulation on the gastric acid secretion and serum gastrin in 15 dogs.
Author examined free and total acidity in 5 experimental dogs which were done with parietal cell vagotomy and after administration of histamine phosphate.
The gastric contents were obtained 1 month after parietal cell vagotomy, 2 times thereafter with 1 month interval respectively.
The results were as follows :
1. In group of 1 month after parietal cell vagotomy, the mean values of free acidity and total acidity before histamine administration have decreased by 40.7% and 37.95VO respectively in comparison with control group. In group of 2 month after parietal cell vagotomy, the mean values of free acidity and total acidity before histamine administration have decreased by 70.4% and 44.4% respectively in comparison with control group. In group of 3 month after parietal cell vagotomy, the mean values of free acidity and total acidity before histamine administration have decreased by 57.7% and 2.9% respectively in comparison with control group.
2. In group of 1 month after parietal cell vagotomy, histamine administration revealed reduction rates of 33.7% in free acidity, 24.0/6 in total acidity comparing with the values of histamine administered control group and made increases of 107.1% in free acidity, 82.0% in total acidity. The mean gastrin value was 52.7pg/ml, that is, 44.0% increment of control group in which the mean gastrin value was 36.6pg/ml.
3. In group of 2 month after parietal cell vagotomy, histamine administration revealed reduction rates of 25.1% in free acidity, 21.8% in total acidity comparing with the values of histamine administered control group and made increases of 367.9% in free
acidity, 111.700 in total acidity.
4. In group of 3 month after parietal cell vagotomy, histamine administration revealed reduction rates of 63.8o in free acidity, 28.800 in total acidity comparing with the values of histamine administered control group and made increases of 58.1% in free acidity, 10.400 in total acidity.
5. Conclusions :
1) The gastric acid secretion was significantly decreased in parietal cell vagotomy comparing with control group before histamine administration.
2) Histamine administration showed significant reduction in gastric acid secretion in parietal cell vagotomy comparing with histamine administered control group.
3) The difference between pre and postoperative serum gastrin levels was not signifi-
cant statistically.
